Tips from Jen !
*Candies, (non chocolate often come packaged at 7-15 carbs)
stock up for cheap 'get me ups' after the holiday, same goes for
Valentines Day, and Easter.
*I got this idea from Jamies kids, who fill up a pill bottle with Jelly
Beans for lows, the carbs are close to 15, and it works well-- use old
test strip containers to hold Nerds, or even Pop rocks, or pure sugar...
or fill with pixie dust, or sugared koolaide packets. two packets are 14
carbs, and fit nicely into a standard test strip container. Nice ideas
for getting BG up fast.
* go do diabetes expos and stock up on various free meters. You can put
one in each car in case the strips your kid has runs out, or they spill
on them, or whatever... avoids the stress of the kid getting yelled at,
and gives you a back up. Most meters come with ten strips. That will
last a few months at least, and you can always ask your doc to prescribe
an extra vial of that type of strip, if it is a different meter, for
your "extra.
I have been to enough expos that we now have a meter for each room in
the house. LOL.
*Look at mexican and Asian grocery stores for "get me ups" often the
candies are chock full of sugar and low on fat, or no fat... perfect for
getting the blood sugar up. Always check ethnic food aisles at Hy Vee or
Wal mart. The candies are often much better to get blood glucose up than
a lot of American made candies.
